3rd INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON PHTHIRAPTERA |
![]() |
| To promote and share basic and applied research on Phthiraptera (lice). To address medical, veterinary and systematic knowledge of lice on public health, agriculture, and the environment. |
| This Congress will bring together leading authorities on lice to review our current knowledge of lice and louse-borne diseases. These interactions will propel the subject forward to a new understanding at a time when louse related research has never been stronger or more important. A major objective of this conference will be the coordination of research into lice and louse-bone-pathogens. Systematics plays an increasingly important role in this endeavourand this Congeress will provide a rare opportunity for interaction between members of the medical, veterinary and systematic community. The diversity of interests of conference participants at the Second Congress was an important catalyst for subsequent research and collaborations. Building upon that experience the Third Congress will include a diverse array of invited plenary lectures, oral presentations and poster presentations from world authorities. |
| Almost three decades ago the First International Congress on Lice and Louse-borne Diseases was convened as pediculosis was a growing concern. Since then, the medical and biological community has undergone a revolution in their approach to understanding infectious diseases. In particular, evolutionary biology was yielding dramatic insights for health scientists, and lice were an important model system for investigating a range of evolutionary and public health questions. The Second International Congress on Phthiraptera was held in Brisbane, Australia, in 2002. This meeting provided a forum of taxonomists to interact with members of the medical and veterinary community, highlighting ways in which basic and applied sciences can better address each others needs. This pointed the way towards an integrated approach for further research |
